Veterinary Nurses at the Heart of Veterinary Care

Matthew Rendle RVN highlights the essential role of veterinary nurses at the UEVP meeting in Brussels.

At the recent Union of European Veterinary Practitioners (UEVP) meeting in Brussels, Matthew Rendle RVN delivered a presentation emphasizing the critical contributions of veterinary nurses and technicians to the profession.

In his talk, “Veterinary Nurses/Technicians: At the Heart of Veterinary Care,” Matthew described the diverse responsibilities of veterinary nurses, including diagnostic testing, inpatient care, and surgical support. He underscored that veterinary nurses complement veterinary surgeons, enabling practices to deliver enhanced patient care while improving team efficiency and communication.

Matthew also spotlighted ACOVENE, a voluntary European organization that accredits veterinary nursing education programs. Since its founding in 2007, ACOVENE has established rigorous standards for training, defined essential competencies, and supported schools across seven countries in delivering high-quality veterinary nurse education. With over 70 accredited programs, ACOVENE aims to create a thriving veterinary nursing community across Europe.

Drawing on his extensive career, Matthew highlighted how the presence of skilled veterinary nurses reduces stress for veterinary surgeons, improves client interactions, and boosts practice outcomes. “Veterinary nurses are not mini vets; they are skilled professionals whose work significantly enhances patient care and team cohesion,” he stated.

Testimonials from international colleagues reinforced his message, praising the unique expertise and compassionate care that veterinary nurses bring to the profession. Matthew’s presentation resonated strongly, reaffirming the integral role of veterinary nurses in advancing animal health and welfare across Europe.
